Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to, or as we say, Karibu Tanzania and Karibu Africa. As you are
embarking on your first safari we bet you have a lot of questions. Here are a
few frequently asked questions from our intrepid travelers.

When is the best time to travel?

Generally, the dry season is the best time for game-viewing. For East Africa, the dry season is usually from July through October. Please keep in mind that these are the peak seasons, so it is essential that you book well in advance before these months.

Our itineraries vary in length and focus. If you have questions or aren’t sure which tour to choose, feel free to contact us at info@laitolya.com or experience@laitolya.com and laitolya@habari.co.tz. we’re happy to help you find (or create!) the perfect safari for you.

What sort of food can I expect?

From the moment you arrive, some meals are included according to package and each is exquisite. Our hotels and lodges offer continental cuisine, in addition to local delicacies that appeal to a wide range of palates. In the bush the quality of the cuisine in lodges and camps is superb. Meats, vegetables and fruits are locally sourced to promote economic growth within the local community and you can be assured of farm to table quality for those lodges who grow their own. For any special meal preferences or dietary requirements please do inform us well in advance.

What is the minimum age for children?

Tours can be tailored to accommodate any age. Depending on where you wish to visit, situations may vary so please call and we will help guide you to the best child friendly packages.

Are your tours escorted?

In Tanzania, travelers enjoy the services of an expert Tour Tour Driver Guide. A translator guide can also be arranged. Not only will they be your lifelong friends, teachers and fellow travelers, but their presence also guarantees flawless passage through hotels and airports and of course enchanting experiences on tour and in the bush.

What type of clothing should I wear?

Your clothing should be comfortable and casual. Khaki, olive, brown, neutral and tan clothing increases your chances of seeing wildlife and offers the added benefit of camouflaging dirt. Since laundry service will be available in many of the places you visit, you should avoid the urge to carry too much. Tanzanians are a welcoming but conservative people and modest clothing will be expected in places of worship or town centers.

What if I need medical attention while on the trip?

In Arusha, the nearest city in the northern circuit there are a number of big hospitals and more remote locations of Tanzania have hospitals and clinics for first instance medical treatment. You are assured of the services of the Flying Doctors if included in your travel insurance—a group of well-qualified doctors who travel by plane throughout the bush to provide treatment and transportation in East Africa whenever necessary. We recommend that our guests have a policy that covers their trip, as travel insurance offers a lot of advantages.

Will someone meet me at the airport?

As our esteemed guests, it is our pleasure to welcome you to our homeland. After passing through customs at your arrival airport you will be greeted by a Laitolya Tours & Safaris staff member who will take you, as quickly and safely as possible, to the comfort of your hotel before you begin your adventure.

When is the Great Migration?

The timing of the Great Migration can vary because it is determined by the weather—specifically rain that brings the new grasses upon which wildebeest graze. If you want to observe this natural marvel it’s best to talk to a Laitolya Tours & Safaris specialist regarding the best time to plan your trip.

The herds can be found amidst the short grasses of Serengeti National Park from November to May. From January onward, wildebeest, zebra and Thompson’s gazelle alternate between the woodlands and plains, depending on the weather. In May they can be spotted, as the grass becomes dry and the herds begin the roughly 500-mile Migration. They move North and by June they are in the plains of Kenya’s Masai Mara where they generally stay until October.

Anticipating the short rains the herds begin their trek down to the Serengeti along an Eastern route. In November and December they arrive to extremely green savannas and woodlands where they stay until the cycle begins again
