Mount Kilimanjaro

The ascent and descent takes five to six days. The park has seven hiking access routes through the Kilimanjaro forest reserve.

Tour Packages

This comprises two routes starting in the same center in the western side of Mt Kilimanjaro (Lemosho route and Londrosi route taking also a minimum of 7-8 days for enjoyable and a comfortable hike).The vegetation changes when you get to Shira plateau where after you join the Kibo circuit.The change is fabulous as you walk through open grasslands and the heath and moorland then onto the alpine desert leading to the arctic zone on the summit. This camping route also passes through the impressive Shira cone cathedral and Shira needles.

Day 1:

● Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro airport there will be a meet and greet and you will then be transferred to Kilemakyaro Mountain Lodge located at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro.
● Your guides will inspect your gear and brief you about your trip.

Day 2:

Londorossi Gate (2100m) to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2750m)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat:Rainforest

● After breakfast check out from the lodge and drive to Londorossi gate (2250m) which will take 1 hour for registration and payment to obtain a permit and then drive back to Lemosho starting point (2100m) for your climb.
● The climb through the rain forest is 6 km to Mti Mkubwa camp (BIG TREE CAMP) -2750m which will take 3 to 4hrs and altitude gained is 650m.
● On the way: Enjoy the beautiful rainforest and the windy trails while learning about the local flora and fauna. The trails here can be muddy and slippery so bring the right gear and be careful.
● Dinner and overnight at the campsite.

Day 3:

Mti Mkubwa Camp (2750m) to Shira Camp (3500m)
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Habitat:Moorland

● After breakfast continue on hiking through the heath and moorland zone to Shira One camp (3500m) which will take 5-6hrs.
● On the way: Leaving the rainforest behind, you open up into the Shira Plateau with its wide views. Keep warm as the temperatures start dropping.
● Dinner and overnight at the campsite.

Day 4:

Shira Camp (3500m) to Shira Two Camp (3850m)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat:Moorland

● After breakfast continue hiking through heath and moorland to Shira Two campsites (3850m) which will take 3 to 4hrs.
● Dinner and overnight at the campsite.

Day 5:

Shira Two Camp (3850m) to Barranco Camp (3940m) via Lava Tower(4650m)
Hiking Time: 6-7 hours
Habitat:Semi-Desert

● Early in the morning after breakfast start hiking to Barranco Camp- (3940m) through Lava Tower – (4650m). It takes 6 -7hrs with a picnic lunch.
● On the way: This day is for acclimatizing
● Dinner and overnight at Barranco camp (3940m).

Day 6:

Barranco Camp (3940m) to Karanga Camp (4000m)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat:Alpine Desert

● After breakfast, start climbing the Barranco walls- (4250m) to Karanga Camp - (4000m). Have a hot lunch, rest and walk around in order to acclimate. It takes 3-4hrs.
● On the way: Note the power and agility of your guides as they take the wall with ease - years and strength built up climbing the mountain.
● Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 7:

Karanga Camp (4000m) to Barafu Camp (4600m)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

● After having breakfast continue on hiking through the heath and moorland to Barafu Camp 4600m. It takes 3-4hrs
● Get a hot lunch, rest and then early dinner and sleep for a few hours.
● On the way: Be sure to take in the breathtaking views of the summit from all angles.
● 11:00 PM: Wake up and pack your essentials for the summit and have hot drinks and snacks as you start hiking to the rooftop of Africa, Uhuru Peak- (5895M) it takes about 6-7hrs and distance covered is 4.86km and altitude gained is 1295m.

Day 8:

Barafu Camp (4600m) to Millenium Camp (3100m) via Uhuru Peak (5896m)
Hiking Time: Ascent 7-8 hours | Descent 6-7 hours
Habitat:Glaciers, Snow-Capped Summit

● 04:30 AM start climbing towards Uhuru peak. It will take roughly 7 to 8hrs to reach the Uhuru peak.
● 12:30 PM: You will have reached the peak, you will stay for half an hour at the peak and later start descending to Barafu camp. It takes about 6 to 7hrs from summit to Barafu camp for breakfast and rest for a few hours, a hot lunch and then continue descending from the alpine desert, heath and moorland to the edge of the rainforest at Millennium
camp- (3100m).
● On the way: Stay warm and stay focused - as your sense of triumph is at the peak. On the way down watch out for uncooperative loose gravel and volcano ash terrain.

Day 9:

Millenium Camp (3100m) to Mweka Camp (1800m)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat:Rainforest

● Walk after breakfast to Mweka Camp (1800m) through the rain forest for 3-4hrs distance covered is 5km and altitude lost is 1400m.
● On the way: The terrain is wet, muddy and steep but the air is filled with heartfelt celebrations over conquering the peak. Be careful not to slip on that joy.
● Overnight at Mweka Camp

Day 10:

Mweka Camp (1800m) to Mweka Gate (890m)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat:Rainforest

● Walk after breakfast to Mweka Gate through the rain Forest for 3-4hrs distance covered is 9.1 km.
● If you made it to the top you will receive your certificate.
● Meet your vehicle and be transferred to Kilemakyaro mountain lodge for dinner and overnight.
