Mount Kilimanjaro

The ascent and descent takes five to six days. The park has seven hiking access routes through the Kilimanjaro forest reserve.

2. MACHAME ROUTE aka Kibabe Trail

This is probably the most scenic and most beautiful route to the summit. The 6-day route is however physically more challenging than the Marangu route also known as the whisky route. The day walks are longer and steeper; however the summit night is one hour shorter.

Day 1:

● Pick up from Kilimanjaro Airport and you will then be transferred to Kilemakyaro Mountain Lodge where you will meet your mountain guide.
● Your guide will inspect your gear and brief you about your trip.

Day 2:

Overnight Tarangire - Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

● After breakfast check out from the lodge and transfer to Kilimanjaro National Park Machame Gate for the first section of the climb
● The trek will take at least 5 to 7 hours.
● On the way: Enjoy the beautiful rainforest and the windy trails while learning about the local flora and fauna. The trails here can be muddy and slippery so bring the right gear and be careful.
● Overnight at Machame camp.

Day 3:

Machame Camp (3000m) to Shira Camp (3800)
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat:Moorland

● Following the steep ridge and crossing the heath and moorland to "picnic rock" and the Shira plateau, to Shira Campsite at around 12500ft/3800m this trek will take 5 to 7 hours.
● On the way: We will be trekking across the valley along a steep rocky ridge so watch your step. Keep warm as temperatures start to drop here.
● Overnight at Shira camp.

Day 4:

Shira Camp (3800) to Barranco Camp (3950) via Lava Tower (4650m)
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat:Semi-Desert

● Head towards Kibo to reach Barranco Campsite 13000ft/ 3950 m. You will head southeast towards Lava Tower, also known as “Shark’s Tooth”(4650m), and soon after you will encounter a second junction that leads to Arrow Glacier before descending again to Barranco Camp.
● This involves trekking for up to 5-7 hours.
● On the way: This day is to help you acclimatize.
● Overnight at Barranco camp.

Day 5:

Barranco Camp (3950) to Barafu Camp (4550)
Hiking Time: 8-9 hours
Habitat:Alpine-Desert

● Cross the floor of the Great Barranco Valley, up the Barranco Wall to the Karanga River - the last water point on this route.
● A steep climb over rocky slabs to Barafu Campsite at 15500ft/ 4600m.
● This trek will take up to 8 to 9 hours.
● On the way: Note the power and agility of your guides as they take the wall with ease - year and strength built up climbing the mountain. Be also sure to note the breathtaking views of the summit from all angles.
● Overnight at Barafu camp 4550m.

Day 6:

Barafu Camp (4550) to Mweka Camp (3000m) vi Uhuru Peak (5896m)
Hiking Time: Ascent 6-7 hours | Descent 5-7 hours
Habitat:Glaciers, Snow-Capped Summit

● An early start for the summit - Uhuru Peak the highest point in Africa at and free standing mountain in the world 19340ft/5896m taking 6 to 7 hours.
● Descend via Barafu Campsite 4550m through the forest to Mweka Campsite at 10000ft/3000m.
● This trek could take 5 to 7 hours.
● On the way: Stay warm and stay focused - as your sense of triumph is at the peak.
● Overnight at Mweka Camp

Meal Plan: Breakfast and Picnic Lunch

Day 7:

Mweka Camp (3000m) to Mweka Wildlife College (1830m)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat:Rainforest

● Descend through the forest to the park gate at Mweka Wildlife College taking 3-4 hours.
● On the way: The terrain is wet, muddy and steep but the air is filled with heartfelt celebrations over conquering the peak. Be careful not to slip on that joy.
● You will then be transferred to your Kilemakyaro Mountain Lodge where you will stay overnight on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day 8:

● After breakfast check out from the lodge or you could decide to extend your trip and enjoy the ambiance.
● You may opt to book a trip to Zanzibar or the National Parks in the Northern Circuit or end your trip and transfer to Kilimanjaro airport for your onward flight home.
